A year of new.

“This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.”

T.S. Eliot

I did it.  It’s been a year of new.  And this last month of new has definitely whimpered.  So I’m going to share the new I started on July 1, blitz the rest, then continue this blog whenever the hell I feel like it.  You know, just like I’ve been doing.  Thanks for reading and see you in the new.  (Ha!) So, back to July 1:

“The cool thing about traveling to a new place is that pretty much everything one experiences there is new.  San Diego was no Thailand, but it was beautiful and definitely new.   The major drawback I had with San Diego was nothing to do with the city but more to do with the fact I was deathly ill and trying to pretend not to be.  That made for a fun-filled plane ride, mon dieu!  Ever been on a plane with a wicked head cold?  I’m happy to say this was my first time and hopefully my last because it was pretty much all around lame.  Lame I say!

Ok, enough whining.  On to the new!

New!  Restaurants!  Night one in San Diego was fun!  Deb and I went to a place called Sevilla, a charming little tapas place with great decor (see photo) and delicious food (sorry, no photo available at this time).

The next night, I met up with my sister’s sister-in-law,  Dee, and we had AMAZING Thai food at a place called Rama, including something called Roti bread, which I never had before and very much enjoyed.”  -Me, speaking to you from two weeks ago.

Fast forward to today, almost a month to the day after the Conference and I can’t remember half of what I did.  Something about a trade show?  Flooring?  Who knows.  It was a crazy time  in the distant past.  So let’s just sum it up and say the #NAAEduConf was all about new:  connections, people, experiences.  I met a ton of people, had a great time and was excited to come home when it was done.

Let’s see if I can remember all the new since then.

New:  Running with Sonia!  We did the 5K loop from the Hawthorne Bridge to the Steel Bridge and it was awesome.

River new:  Same river with new peeps.  (Love the Rounsville clan!) Check it out: The weirdest photo of me ever!  Hooray!  Cherice said “Look vampy.”  This is the tragic result:

I need to do more running.  Sonia?

Which leads me to the next new!  Another 5k, this time in Gabriel Park (a park I’d never visited before, so, yup, that’s right-new).   This was the saddest 5k ever, due to Clayton’s amazingly bad cold.  (Yes.  Cold.  Ahem.)

New:  Restaurant.  The Sweet Hereafter is vegan amazing.

New!  Volunteering!  I’m a Marketing Mentor now!  Hooray!

New! Company picnic at Oaks Park!  Fun!

New!  Meetup- PDX Food Startups had tons of delicious samples and interesting stories.

New! Golf Tournament! I’d never been to Langdon Farms before.  It was beautiful.  CB sponsored a hole.  Hole #1, baby.

New!  Movie.  World War Z was god-freaking-awful.  Pandering to the typical Hollywood hero archetype in the laziest way possible.  John Dies at the End was great, though.

New word!  Mumpsimus!  It’s a noun (good job, word!  Way to be descriptive!)  meaning:

1. A view stubbornly held in spite of clear evidence that it’s wrong.
2. A person who holds such a view.
So clearly not me.

And that, peeps, is why this year ended with a whimper.  I can’t even remember what new I’ve done, though, dutifully, I’ve at least learned a new word, or tried a new food, or gone somewhere new, every day over the past year.

Still, though, I’m glad I undertook this project.  Blogging is a fun way to catalog memories (while boring the crap out of your friends!).  Plus, I now have the mindset of new.  Given the choice between new or not, I’ll always choose the new.  Variety being the spice of life and all, I firmly believe this the mindset of joy.

So thanks for experimenting with me.  See you next blog post, where, undoubtedly, I’ll have more newness to share.

Until then, embrace the joy of living.  XO.

You make me happy. :)

Getting out there. #lovelife #livelife #toomuchtimeontwitter #sigh

What’s more exciting than actually going to happy hour?  Reading about it on someone’s clb.  (Crappy little blog.  C’mon, let’s make it a thing!)

Google “Crappy Little Blog” and a picture of Cillian Murphy. Works for me. #mmmmm

In that spirit (pun totally intended!) last week I had a Winesday (another new thing?) with a couple of my co-workers.  It was FUN!  Ladies, repeat anytime.

Thursday.  Since I worked a sixteen hour day Thursday, the opportunity for newness was rather absent.  I did meet a ton of new people, so that’s going to have to count.

Friday was amazing.  “Why, Roz?” (I imagine all 12 of you breathlessly wondering.)  Friday I made a new purchase.  Something that 1,484,232,448 people already have.  Better make that 1,484,232,448 and ONE, people, because I have arrived.  Yup.  I got a muthaf’n iPhone.  And it’s everything I ever dreamed it could be.  Society, I’ll never doubt you again.  What’s that?  Factory farming still exists?  And child trafficking?  And environmental devastation?   And Rush Limbaugh?  Nevermind.

Saturday was health and happiness galore.  Clayton and I ran the Starlight Run together.  It was AWESOME!  I had my best time yet, I was able to run most of the way and still work out Saturday and Sunday and I’m not even sore today!  7,000 people turned out. (I’m guessing just for us.)  AND we reused our Hunter S. Thompson Halloween costumes.    I’m super excited to run it again next year.

Kimi called us Hunter and Huntress. Nice one, Kimi!

Kimi called us Hunter and Huntress. Nice one, Kimi!

Sunday I went to Mandy’s graduation!!  From Lewis and Clark!!!  She has her M.A.T. now!!!!  I’M SO PROUD OF HER!!!! The commencement speaker,  Dr. Pedro Noguera was absolutely phenomenal.  He referenced the poet Rumi (fyi that link is as much for my sake as it is yours), Paolo Freire (that one’s just for you) and a Hopi poem advising “Speak your truth.”   I was moved to tears more than once during his speech, but when Mandy walked across that stage, man, I was practically bawling.  YAY Mandy!!!

When asked how she felt at this moment, Mandy replied, “I feel like a Master.” As well you should, honey.

Other new things this weekend included:  A new song!  New painting!  New clothes!  New chips (wait, that was today).  And a new Game of Thrones….which, WHAT the GODDAMN!  If you didn’t see it yet, prepare for some serious heartache.  George R.R. Martin may be some sort of sadist.

I’ll check back in with y’all soon.  XO etc!

Happy Mother’s Day! Enjoy the new.

This week’s new?  WAAAAYYAYAY more fun than last week’s new.  Thursday I volunteered tending bar for the Portland Rose Festival Foundation.  My friend Steph is the Sales and Marketing Intern, and recruited me to bartend for the Meet n’ Greet she put together.  It was a BLAST!  Totally passed out a ton of cards (including one to a guy who I’m pretty sure thinks I was hitting on him, despite the fact I said to him, “Oh, I’m happily married.  I’m not hitting on you.”  Smooth, Roz.  Real smooth.)   Friday I tried something new at Trader Joe’s.  What, I have no idea.  I remember thinking, “Oh, that’s new!  I can review it for my blog!”  Sadly, I have no friggin’ clue what the hell it was.  Sigh.  Smooth, Roz.  Real smooth.

Because it’s Mother’s Day. So why not.

Yesterday was a fun bunch of new!!  I went to Aurora, Oregon.  Where the hell is that, you’re probably wondering, and rightly so.  It’s a quaint little town in the heart of Oregon wine country.  It’s chalk full o’ charm, complete with antique stores, an adorable little museum and friendly old people all over the darn place.  We were there for this:

Bring Mom to town May 11 or 12 with our special package described below. It was SO fun!  Who knew Aurora was such a hip town?

Monday I tried a new Sushi place with our awesome friends Adeline and Bruce.  I also got a new outfit.  Exciting!

Tuesday I got a new book.  It was a present from one of our Airbnb guests.  She’s a PhD in Classical Italian Literature, and, appropriately, her gift was a book in that genre.  It’s called The Decameron.  I haven’t started it yet, but Dr. Deb helpfully left a whole sheet of notes and explanations for me when I do.  Thoughtful!

Wednesday/Thursday were new foods/wine.  I know this because I jotted “food/wine.”   I really need to start taking better notes.

Friday I went to an interactive showing of the Big Lebowski.  OH my GOD!  It was awesome.  Since I was dressed as Walter (Clayton was the Dude, of course) I was dubbed a “Waltress” and got to beat a pinata during the car smashing scene.

The Dude abides.

Yesterday I went to the Dragontree Spa and spent 2.5 hours of total green tea/aromatherapy/foot bath/massage bliss.  Five minutes at work practically undid it all, but it was nice while it lasted.  🙂  I also got a new hat.  Today I’m running/walking a new 5k.  Angus is coming, too.  He’ll be in the stroller.  Wish us luck!

Jury Duty.

Last Sunday I tried a new thing that knocked something off my PSU bucket list.  I went to a movie at 5th Avenue Cinemas!  5th Avenue Cinema is Oregon’s only student-run cinema on the campus of PSU.  Free for students and only $3 for the general public, plus, FREE popcorn!  Hell yes!  We saw Rosemary’s Baby.  It was actually pretty creepy!  The music made the film.

That’s right, 1968 era Mia Farrow! FREE popcorn!

Last week’s new was a little different.  Read: incredibly draining.  Normally I try to keep this blog lighthearted.   However, last week’s new was not a subject that can be taken lightly, even at the risk of disappointing my 12 readers.  As you may have inferred from the title, I had jury duty.  I suppose jury duty, under certain circumstances, could have been funny.

That cat is not happy about being called.

However, this was a child molestation case.  A father was accused of molesting his daughters.   (Accused and subsequently convicted.)  It was 2.5 days of listening to testimony about the parts of children no one should be interested except for their doctor.  After that, another 1.5 days of discussing the extremely specific details about what was done to those parts and when.  It was rough.  I debated sharing the details with the reader (s) of this blog, but no one needs to hear that.  So just take my word that every day was filled with some fresh unpleasantness and we’ll leave it at that.

The only person who even slightly benefited from this whole thing was Clayton, who is thrilled that I have now completely lost interest in ever seeing another episode of Law and Order: SVU.  Clayton really hates Law and Order: SVU.

Saturday’s and Sunday’s new both involved foods.   Saturday was lunch at Pambiche where Mandy and I tried this delicious mango rum smoothie drink, and Sunday I had a Cinco de Mayo tamale with sweet potatoes and walnuts from Whole Foods.  It was amazing!

More new coming your way soon.  🙂

California new. (#govegan.)

We, as most of you Facebook friends know and I’m sure care tons about, are (were, this is taking me awhile to write) in SF.  I’ve been to SF many times, but still, any vacation means, of course, a veritable geyser of new.  Shall we explore the explosion? Yes, indeed.

Friday, after dropping off our furry kids at our ever-patient and super-awesome friend’s house (thanks Adeline and Bruce!) we headed to the airport to revel in the fact that we no longer work there.  Worst. Job. Ever.  After enjoying a delightful breakfast at my former place of employment (turns out, eating there isn’t nearly as bad as working there) we boarded our plane and headed for the Golden State.

Ah, San Fransisco.  One thing about living in a big city that you forget about living here in lil’ ol’ Portland is the ubiquitous smell of piss.  Breathe deep, people.  From the moment we boarded the BART, to our last bus ride in SF, the scent of pee lingered omnipresent.  Other than that,  I had forgotten what a lovely, charming and friendly city SF is.

April 2013 San Fransisco 053

Lovely!

After disembarking (or, disemBARTing if you will) the BART (HAha!) we lugged our little wheelie suitcase over to the appropriate bus stop, and settled in for a relaxing ride…the idea of which was immediately shrieked out of existence by an entire 2nd grade class who boarded the bus mere stops after we got on.  Hell on wheels, indeed.  Surviving the ride through pure grit and cheerful conversation with the rightfully sympathetic mothers of the children, we made it to our stop and hopped out into the bright, windy San Fransisco day.

April 2013 San Fransisco 048

Our Airbnb (click the link if you’re going to SF-great location and room) was only two blocks from Golden Gate Park (told you! Great location!) and after a quick round of introductions with our solicitous host,  we headed out to forage for food.  We made it one block.  Clayton was hungry, and his hunger was manifesting itself in a series of complaints directed mostly at me.  Fortunately, the cafe boasted vegan (#govegan) items on the menu taped to the front window.  Thank the mighty lord.

Making our way to the counter, the girl behind it (the counter; look, Mom, I specified my pronoun!) looked up and said delightedly, “Oh my gosh!  Roz!!  It’s Kristal!  I stayed at your house!”   “Kristal!  Oh my gosh!  This is so cool!”   Yup, 15 minutes in the city and already had made two Airbnb connections.   Kristal gave us a hook-UP on food, delicious tofu pies with salad so fresh it was likely she’d just picked the lettuce and strawberries herself (not that likely, really, but damn fresh) plus thick espresso and citrus-y Sauvignon Blanc from the Napa Valley.   When Kristal had stayed with us, she’d left her hat, which I had returned to her.  She wanted to repay the courtesy and did an excellent job.

After lunch, we strolled through Golden Gate.  People lounged about in the warm sun, and Clayton stopped to examine a knotted tree while I snapped pictures of the numerous statues commemorating the founders of San Fran.  “Look, honey!”  I heard my husband exclaim.  “Look what I found!”  He held up a small vial.  “Bet it’s acid!”  Sigh.  “That’s great, Clayton, but dude!  Why are you touching that? What the hell?  List of things on nobody’s bucket list #3:  Don’t play with the strange vials of liquid one may find in Golden Gate Park.”  Grinning and utterly unmollified, Clayton placed the vial in a small hole in the tree.   When we returned to the park two days later, the vial hadn’t been touched.  So, if you’re in SF and totally crazy, go to GGP and start peering in tree-holes.  Who knows what you’ll find?

Put it back, Clayton.

Put it back, Clayton.

Despite the adventure of drink-me vials in the park, Haight Street awaited and we were ready for more wine.  Wandering on Haight involved pool, chai tea, martinis, an anarchist bookstore, hard ciders, thrift shops, craft shops, new boots (for both of us), a new dress, and more cider.  Oh, and, no big deal–Clayton getting scouted for a Levi’s commercial.  Yeah, they even called him back yesterday (again, taking me a while to write this).  True, the callback was at a hotel in SF in two hours from the time they called, so obviously it didn’t happen, but still, it was cool.

After naps and more wine with our hosts, we went to hear live Irish music at a pub near where we were staying.  It was awesome.  Owned and tended by a husband and wife duo from Ireland, the conversation was lively and the beer was strong and plentiful (yay, Guinness!).

Saturday began with the most crowded bus ride I’ve ever taken.  Towards the end of it, Clayton was seated and I was standing over him, much to the delight of two women nearby.  “Girl, yeah!  Yeah, girl!  You put them big ol’  things right in his FACE, girl!”  I grinned.  “It’s our anniversary.”  “Yeah, girl, you know that’s right!  You make him remember why he married you!  Yeah!”  I couldn’t help but think lack of oxygen on a crowded bus thanks to my ample bosom wasn’t exactly why Clayton married me, but still.  The encouragement was nice.

Eventually, the commotion grew to be to much for us, and we wedged our way off the bus and started walking.  And walking.  And walking.   Good exercise, but I would conservatively estimate that 90% of the area covered during our walk smelled strongly of pee.  We did get to see a woman standing up, asleep, with her head resting on the top of a garbage can, though, so that was uplifting.

We finally, after stopping at a coffee shop and then a Goodwill (I needed another floppy hat) we finally made it to Gracias Madre.   Oh my vegan god.  (#govegan.)

Divine.

Not only was the food some of the best I’ve ever eaten, the atmosphere was enchanting.  The face of Gracias Madre looks to be another Mission Street hole-in-the-wall (note:  nothing wrong with MSHITWs) but the inside of the structure is spacious and reminiscent of a calm Spanish hacienda (or what I imagine a calm Spanish hacienda to be like, anyway).  With fresh farm-to-table food and a sunny, open  dining room, GM was worth every step we took to get there.

Flushed and full of delicious life, we re-entered the real world to go sort out my mistake.  Being the Virgo I am, I’d purchased our tickets to Alcatraz prior to our arrival to SF.  That morning, though, I discovered that, rather than buying seats on a cruise on Monday, April 15th I had mistakenly bought them for Monday, April 8th.  Which did us no good at all.

Fortunately, the nice folks at the Alcatraz tour company let us do standby!   SUPER nice of them.  I can’t say that all the rich food and two habanero pineapple margaritas made for a particularly pleasant ride over, but once we got there it was totally worth it.   I hadn’t been to Alcatraz since I was a kid, and Clayton had never been, and both of us felt appropriately chilled (except for when we saw the family of Canadian Geese.  AWWW!  Nesting season.  SO cute!).

April 2013 San Fransisco 087

The National Park Service does a fantastic job with the tour, providing audio narration read by former guards and inmates.  The end of the tour featured an exhibit about rehabilitated murdered, complete with a section for feedback that was clearly modeled after a YouTube comments section.  The biggest thing I took away from Alcatraz, though, were that the cells were still bigger than the cages in factory farms, and that what we do to the worst among our own kind is STILL better than we treat other species.  #govegan

Actually, this is way nicer than what animals in factory farms get. #goveganalready

Actually, this is way nicer than what animals in factory farms get. #goveganalready

After Alcatraz we took the bus over to the Tenderloin.  Another journey well worth it.  Golden Era Vegan Restaurant  was calm, quick, inexpensive, and the food was delicious.  Except the “vegan lamb.”  That was actually kind of gross.  Tough and salty.  New, though, so that’s good. #govegan!

Tired from a day of exploration, we retreated to our Airbnb oasis to watch Animal Factory.  It’s a pretty great movie.  You should watch it.

Sunday was another beautiful day.  We bussed it over to the Mission District so Clayton could experience the rapture that is a Mission Street Burrito, and then went to a street fair where Kristal said she’d be tabling.  We failed to find Kristal, but we did meet up with our friend Rebecca.  We also saw some women stacking a bearded dragon on a tortoise, but that is neither here nor there, though it should be noted that neither animal seemed to mind the stacking.

Driving with Rebecca is an adventure in and of itself, but after a few nail biting minutes we arrived at the Sutro Bath House remains, and the glorious Pacific Ocean.   It was windy.

https://mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com/attachment/u/0/?ui=2&ik=9d0a881a03&view=att&th=13e42095b83a3871&attid=0.5&disp=inline&safe=1&zw&saduie=AG9B_P9HXJKpMa0yOS1x-p0Otzx_&sadet=1367001116391&sads=c46zY5YieG4rfZYc-IqLiz1wWms

Windy and romantic!

We also visited the camera obscura, which was, as expected, amazing, and capped off our Rebecca time with a late and leisurely lunch at  another Supreme Master vegetarian house.  It’s part of our campaign to get Rebecca to renounce meat.  (Did I mention #govegan?)

After the restaurant, Rebecca left us and we headed back through Golden Gate park to the De Young Museum.  Walking though the well-manicured park peppered with carefree people listening to the dulcimer tones of a classical guitar duo was like stepping into the movie-world of Aeon Flux, without any sinister dystopian implications, of course.

Gorgeous.

Gorgeous.

The De Young was breathtaking.  I could have wandered for hours.  Unfortunately, we arrived at 4:00 and the museum closed at 5:15.  Thus begun the fastest museum tour I’ve ever experienced.  The good news?  They let you take pictures! (Of everything but the special exhibit.  Which was Girl With A Pearl Earring.   I actually teared up looking at that painting.  So mysterious.  So perfect.)  I took roughly 7,000 photos of everything else, though!  Want to see some?  I’ll take silence as a yes!

Cool bullet castle!

This lady, immortalized!

This lady, immortalized!

Crazy throne thing!

Crazy throne thing!

Sorry about the weird formatting.  Believe it or not, the above is try number several, and it took me 15 minutes to get even that, so there ya go.

After the whirlwind but totally awesome flight through the De Young, we strolled though the verdant and vibrant park, pausing to tip and listen to the guitarists.  Sigh.  Bliss.

Our eventual destination was Haight Street, where we stopped for a cider at a Milk Bar (intentionally evoking the Clockwork Orange connection) for cider and rest.  There was a lonely musician being largely ignored on stage, and cameras everywhere, which the bartender informed us that the owner used to keep tabs on his bar from home.   Oh, and Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure was playing.  Despite that, we left after one drink to explore Amoeba Records.  We finished the day with picnic foods, wine, and movies at our Airbnb.

Monday we met Phil.  Who’s Phil, you’re probably wondering (and rightly so).  Phil was actually going to be staying with us the day we returned from San Fransisco.  Yup, another Airbnb connection.  Airbnb rules.  Phil took us to this little diner in the mission that serves vegan seitan sandwiches and vegan Guinness shakes.  #govegan and #awesome!  After some great food and conversation, we took our leave of Phil and went back to Pier 39.  The plan was to ride across the Golden Gate Bridge.  The wind had other ideas.  No friggin’ way were we riding a bike at all what with all the gusting and bellowing Mother Nature was doing, much less across a damn bridge.  We settled for chocolate at Ghirardelli and wine tasting at Wattle Creek Winery.  The wine was good, the server was a racist dick.

The wind had taken a five minute breather for this shot.

The wind had taken a five minute breather for this shot.

Wandering around the Pier 39 area, we were about to cross in to said Pier proper when we hear, “Clayton!  Oh my gosh!!!  I can’t believe I’m seeing you here!”  In a trip filled with synchronicity, we were graced with yet another happy coincidence.  Clayton’s mom’s friend Lou was in town for a registrars conference, and was taking a break to explore the Pier.  Life is harmonious sometimes.

One last stop at a bar with beautiful 1920s decor and bored, surly servers and it was time to go back for the night.  We had an early flight.

And thus concludes San Fransisco new!   Thanks for reading!  Since almost two weeks have passed since our return, I’m going to blitz some of the interim new.

Tried:  Daiya Swiss Slices.  BEST. THING. EVER.

Watched:  Argo.  Did not like it.  Also watched:  I AM.  LOVED it!

Tried:  New Gym’s pool.   Love that, too.

Tried:  New wines.  I probably loved them all, too.

Visited:  Vie de Boheme wine shop.  (Thanks for the Groupon, Matt and Natalie!) Tried pineapple champagne.  Loved it!

Experienced:  Two days of jury duty selection.  Result?  I’ll be spending three days next week hearing a case.  Details to follow after the trial is over.

Read:  Finally started Game of Thrones.  The book is even better than the show, and the show is pretty gd fantastic.

Tonight:  Going to Rodriguez!!!  Got tickets off Craigslist.  I can’t wait!!!  Newness rules.

See you soon!

Bona Fide.

My new thing Monday was less something I tried and more something that was decided for me, but, as a first in my life, I’m totally counting it.  I’m on salary now!  I feel like such a grown up!!

Yesterday I tried Trader Joe’s Sweet Potato Tater Tots, and they were amazing.

And now here it is April 11th and I can barely remember what I did 5 minutes ago.   Damn.   I feel okay about that, though.

Let’s give this a go, shall we? Last Wednesday, I honestly have no idea what I did.  None.  Man.  I do something (learn something, try something) new everyday, so I know I did, but damn.  Nothing.  So Thursday was “try a new food” and Friday was “try a new wine.”  The food was a new vegan recipe (weird!) and the wine was red.  How extremely frigging uninteresting.

Saturday’s new was worth a shout out, though- I discovered a new store called “Here We Go Again.”  It’s an upscale consignment shop, and it is awesome!  I got some  Criterion Brock green earrings and a big chunky necklace.  This was in consolation for the fact that NOTHING I tried on fit.  Which is enough to make a gal re-double her Weight Watchers efforts, seriously).   Sunday was more new food, and Monday I did a super-secret new thing, that will lead to another new thing if I am successful.

Apparently this is a thing?

Tuesday I went on a ride-along with one of our salespeople, Liz.  It was interesting and educational!  Yesterday I finally was able to get approval on my long-campaigned for “Bring Your Dog to Work Day” aka “Criterion Bark.”  Sweet victory.

Today I went to a new WW meeting.  It was slightly less cult like.

Tomorrow,  it’s off to SF for a whole bunch of new with my sweetie.  I’ll keep you posted.  See ya in Cali!

Finally, an update on what I’ve been eating. You can exhale now.

I have not posted a blog since late February.  It’s been kinda busy.   You know, trying new things and whatnot.   That, and school.  You know.   So, I have decided to blitz the hell out of this blog.  I’ve kept notes, and by god, you all are going to find out what I’ve been doing, eating, and drinking.  Because it’s all just so very interesting.

So, let’s rewind all the way back to the heady days of Feb. 2013- the 23rd, to be exact.  This was happening:

Silencer 02.23.13

Yup, that’s Silencer, rocking out.   Seeing them was not a new thing for me, I just wanted to promote my husband’s band.   The new thing for that day was a new makeup tutorial.  I looked good.  The tutorial worked.

Sunday, Feb. 24th, Clayton and I walked over to B-dub to get our bikes, and discovered public art (totally new to me).  It’s a bioswale/public art area.  I love discovering cool things in my own backyard.

The 25th, apparently, was a new recipe, though I’ll be damned if I remember what.  Some vegan thing, no doubt.  The 26th we tried a new kind of vegan chicken tenders, the Fred Meyer “Simple” brand.  They were good!  (Count the number of times I say vegan in this post!  It’ll be a fun game.  Or make you want to punch me.)  Not super point-friendly, though.  The 27th was awesome– Mara and  I went to see Venus in Fur.  It was a really interesting play, superbly acted and beautifully scripted.  I love my Mara dates.

Thursday, Feb. 28th we tried the PSU Rec Center’s new equipment, and it kicked ass.  Friday I tried a new Sangiovese, a bold style of Italian Red.  Yum.

Saturday I got a new haircut, and Sunday I made a (vegan!) soup with capers and curry.  It was new, it was vegan, it was healthy, and it was delicious!  Vegan.

Monday March 4, my co-worker Angela introduced me to Lana Del Ray.  Never heard of her before, so, new!  Yay!

Tuesday I FINALLY used the sky bridge at PSU.  I’ve been meaning to go up there for over two years, and I finally did it.  Look, I have proof!  IMAG0256.jpg             IMAG0255.jpg

Thanks to the lovely Abbey for modeling!

Wednesday I went to a new Weight Watchers meeting.  There was a lot of clapping.

March 7th I wrote on my little new thing list “pizza.”  Okay, that’s fricking helpful.   Ditto for the 8th: “movie.”  Although that one I actually remember (no thanks to YOU, list).  We saw “Beasts of the Southern Wild.”  Dude.  IN-tense.

Sunday our Airbnb guest gave me acupuncture in my hand.  It was kind crazy, but it DID make my always-aching back feel better.

The 10th of March marked the first day of our new walking club at work “Criterion Walk.”  Ha-HA!  Guess who came up with that little slice of hilarity, thanks much.

Tuesday was more new recipes, a sauté with kale, corn, and tomatoes.  Point-friendly, and, you guessed it, vegan.

Wednesday I got my copy of my beautiful friend Kimi’s first-ever book!!  It is, of course, amazing.  Go buy it here, now.

Thursday was more friend-generated awesomeness, as Mara and I went to see Greedy Lying Bastards, a film by former Obliterated drummer Craig Rosebraugh.  As the title suggests, it’s a fun little romp about climate change, and I cannot recommend it enough.

Craig, pictured doing the exact opposite of armchair activism.

Friday I made a scavenger hunt at work!  It was fun!  Saturday I went to a fitness fair at the convention center in preparation for Sunday’s new, the Shamrock Run!  All of this was work-related, and all of it kicked butt.

Me, being photobombed by a remarkably unenthusiastic looking child.

Monday the 18th I tried some new chips.  Wow.  Amazing.  Who cares.

Tuesday, though, was pretty amazing.  I took my final final.  I finished my undergraduate degree, Tuesday, March 19th, 2013, at approximately 7 pm.  And that, at least to me, is pretty damn amazing.

Wednesday (rather anti-climatically) I tried a raw plantain for the first time.  I also learned it’s pronounced “plat-in” not “plan-tane.”  So there’s that.  We also went to see “Searching for Sugarman,”  one of the best stories I’ve ever seen.  This movie won Best Oscar Documentary, and most deservedly so.

Thursday just says “recipe,” so vegan blah blah vegan vegan.  Vegan.

Friday I got fitted for a crown.  Kinda sucked, truth be told.

Sat. I went to a new gym (with Cherise, no less!).  Yay!

Sunday Clayton and I were going to go to the Gorge, but time got away from us, so I ended up just getting a new shirt, which I very much like.

Monday March 24th I tried a new kind of wine, but I’ve done the recycling since then, so I have no idea what it was.  Red something-or-rather.  Does it matter?

Tuesday I went wine tasting with my friends Steph and Kit.  We went to Island Mana Wines.  Pineapple Sauv. Blanc?  Yes please!

Wednesday I tried new pizza at Sizzle Pie.  I love Sizzle Pie.  It was (are you ready?) vegan!!  And delicious.

Thursday my folks gave me a new camera, and Friday I tried another new pineapple drink.  Yesterday I went for a picnic with Mandy and Serena, and today’s new will be a new workout.

And that, people, is five weeks in the life of Roz.  See you soon.

Weeks of new, just for you!

Annnnddd we’re back to rhyming.

Because rhyming is this cool.

Lots of catching up to do on the ol’ blog front, so let’s dive right in, y’all!  (ahem.  yes.  corny colloquialisms ending now.)

Sunday 2/10:   Sunday was jogging mania!  Mellisa and I went down to the riverfront for an 8 am jog.  It was pretty awesome.  If you want to know where the beautiful people are, look no further than the Riverfront at 8 am on a Sunday.  Seriously.  There were droves of muscular people sprinting along in expensive looking jogging gear.  Needless to say, I fit right in.

Interestingly, there were also several people just waking up after spending the night under the bridge.  Looking south on Naito was like looking at an ad campaign for staying in school.  One side:  Bridge.  Other side:  Health and Prosperity.   Maybe someone should do an ad campaign.

Monday 2/11:  In my notes, professionally jotted on the back of a letter from my insurance agent, I wrote “wine.”  “How odd,” you must be thinking.  “Roz tried some new wine.”   Crazily enough, I sure did.  The wine was called “Mad Housewife” (truthfully the main reason I bought it) and it was a full bodied red, with notes of cherry and plum.  In other words, it made for one happy wife (me).

Tuesday 2/12 :  One of my favorite places in the world is the Portland City Grill, where I met my friend Mandy for a glass of, guess what, new wine.  I tried a glass of Suav. Blanc.  It was tasty.  Really, I love the view at the PCG enough anything would have been fine.

Wednesday 2/13 I tried a new recipe.  Something vegan, I think.  My insurance letter notes are a tad unclear, as is my memory.

Thursday, 2/14 was supposed to be a fun new thing-blacklight mini-golf with my hubby.  Instead, I had another, not nearly as fun new thing.  I got a partial root canal.  It sucked.  But Clayton’s super thoughtful Valentine’s present totally made up for it.  I love that man.

Friday 2/15, in the midst of extreme  mouth pain, I learned a new word.  Do you subscribe to Wordsmith?  You should!  It’s pretty great, in fact, enough so that new words were also the new things for 2/17 and 2/18.  Of course you’ll be wanting to know the words.  The first: chthonic, meaning “of or related to the underworld.”  That HAS to be a band name.  The other ones, you’re going to have to click the link.  Because Wordsmith is awesome and you should go there now.

Saturday 2/16 I tried a new salon-Bouffant- for my Shellac.  I had a Groupon.  It was okay, but I think I’ll stick to Tao Nails and Spa.  They haven’t failed me yet.

Sunday was a new thing for Angus!  We went jogging again, and this time were accompanied by Angus.   Which meant that there was no jogging.  He was not having it.  It was a lovely morning for a leisurely stroll, though.

Angus was not going to jog, dammit.

Angus was not going to jog, dammit.

Jumping forward to Wednesday 2/19, I tried a crazy mystery ball from Food Fight! Vegan Grocery.  You all know how much I love FF, right?  Well, Wednesday I stopped to get Clayton a vegan twinkie, aka a Dillo, and was intrigued by something I saw in the freezer.  It was a clear plastic to-go box, with four large green balls inside.  No labeling, no pictures, no company information, no nothing.  Just a price tab in front of the box saying “Cheese Balls.  $6.75.”  This was clearly too intriguing to pass up, so I plunked down the cash and took them home, where, upon microwaving this alien blob thing we discovered that, yup, it was indeed a vegan cheese ball.  And a damn good one, too.  Still no idea who made it, though.

Yesterday I did a bunch of new stuff:  I bought a new kind of eyeliner at Sephora, I went to a work conference at the Marriott, and we had dinner with our former neighbors and now friends (Hey, Leslie and Manuel!) at one of my other favorite places, Blossoming Lotus.  We split a new dish-Braised Seitan with roasted Brussels Sprouts in White Truffle oil (DROOL!) and tried a new kind of Tempranillo.  The food and wine were only exceeded by the conversation, and worth every penny/point (yup, still doing Weight Watchers).

Today I planted the seeds of (hopefully) two new things, neither of which I want to jinx, so that’s all I’m going to say on the matter.  Fingers crossed and see you soon!

And just because:  Here’s a walrus getting a birthday cake.  This one gets me every time.

See you soon!

It says sausages up there!

Wow, my whole blog that I typed just…went away.  The sadness.  The horror.

So, starting over:  It’s been a new-food-tastic week!  Last week, I tried Mexican Chipotle Field Roast Sausages.   They were not too spicy…for the first 2 seconds of eating them, then after that, the spice kicked in and kicked my mouth.  Still, not bad sausages.  Really, though, it’s hard to go wrong with Field Roast.  Love that stuff!

Look at all the sausages up there! (5 point if you can name that movie.)

I also tried the Trader Joe’s vegan chicken strips (thanks for sharing, Desmond!)  and several new recipies (including a creamy broccoli with roasted cashew that’s good enough to go in the cookbook I’m co-authoring with my sis).

Monday’s new thing was awesome.  I had another lady’s night, this time at McMenamin’s Edgefield, and MAN, was it ever fun!  We sampled cupcakes from Piece of Cake (new to me!), we swam in the pool (also new!) and we ran around taking pictures with all the beautiful art that adorns the walls of Edgefield.

It was seriously ridiculously fantastically adverb-ly fun.  I wish I was in that pool right now.

The next day, appropriately, I started Weight Watcher’s, at least, I called in for the meeting.  I’ve done Weight Watcher’s before, but doing it with a work team is a totally new thing.  And the following day I actually started points counting with the WW online and mobile tools (again, a new experience for me).   So far, it’s been pretty easy and I feel great!

Yeah, I’m not too down with Plan B.

Yesterday Clayton and I went to the Good Food Here food pod on Belmont.  I’ve been meaning to go forever, and, in the spirit of making this blog about more than new stuff I did at work (filling out that expense report was thrilling for me, but even I have a hard time making “filled out an expense report” fun to read about) we headed off to GFH.

It was pouring.  And cold.  And windy.  However,  this is Oregon, so there were still a few carts open and ready for business.  We chose Herb’s Mac and Cheese:  a wise choice, because it turns out Herb is getting married and will be closing his cart for a month!  Congrats, Herb!

We ordered vegan mac and cheese with broccoli, and the wait in the cold was totally justified when we were handed our steaming containers of cheesy noodle-y goodness.  The food was delicious, the service friendly and fast, and the prices were reasonable.  So nevermind the weather, Herb, you will see us again!

We didn’t bother to snap a photo, so here’s one from offline and sunnier times.

See you soon with more NEW!!  Whoo!

Blog Blitz, round 2!

Is it any coincidence that my blog has lay cold and dark since Jan. 7- the same day school started?  As my lovely mother always says, in a word, no.   Between the post holiday malaise and the fact I went from having no time to having even less time, well, the blog has suffered.  Damn, that’s becoming the regular intro to my poor blog.   So neglected.   However, the new things themselves have been going strong, mostly in food form.  What follows is a scintillating look into a haphazard food journal, minus the Instagram pics.  You’ve stopped reading?  Thanks for hanging in as long as you did.

And now, ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you, BLOG BLITZ, round two!!!  2013:  The year of the new.

So!  New things over the past TWENTY DAYS (I am SO behind on this. Dude.) And now it’s 22. Mon dieu.

The Portland Aquarium…was all wet.   Not really.  Half the tanks were “Coming soon!”  So, though metaphorically all wet, for those of you who are huge fans of 50s slang, the actually aquarium was pretty dry.  Fortunately, we had a Google Offers half off (which the polo sporting 16 yr old cashier, predictably, had no idea what to do with).  Still, though feeding the sharks was kinda cool, even at half off the aquarium just wasn’t quite worth it.  The guy alone in a dark room screaming at the jellyfish tanks was pretty amusing.   And Clayton liked the eel crammed in Buddha’s skull.

Admittedly, this crab was pretty cool looking.

Admittedly, this crab was pretty cool looking.

Raj Patel gave us food for thought.  The Illahee lecture series is free for PSU students.  This year’s theme is “Who Owns You?” and if that doesn’t stir your soul or at least pique your curiosity then what the hell are you doing in Portland? (Kidding.  I’m not trying to be one of those dadgum liberal elitists Fox News is always yelling about.) Mr. Patel gave a thorough and eye-opening look at who owns our food, and how the people in power manipulate the starving (or obese) masses.   The next lecture is Buck Parker talking about “Who Owns Our Environment?” It’s  on February 27, 2013.  Go.  Now.  Or, you know, a month from now.

-I was (in a) suite!   A couple of friends and I went to the beach.  It was the first time I’d left Clayton at home in over five years.  I missed Clayton, but the beach was fun.

-New recipes!  Baked cauliflower, anyone?  SO GOOD!  Thanks, New York Times!

-I got class!  The first week of school is filled with new books, new classes, and new people.  I’m gonna miss this.

-Parce que quiche es fantastiquie!  I’ve tried, like, five new kinds of quiches at Sweet Pea.  They all kick ass.

-Y vino, tambien!  Yes, I’ve tried some new wines.  What a shocker. Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc wins for the tastiest.

-New movies are pretty good.  LOOPER was actually better than good and I highly recommend it, and Phantoms (new to me, geez) was actually a little silly, so no Roz recommendation for you.  Sorry, Ben.

-New books are better.  A Year In Provence.  My boss Deb recommended it.  I’m excited to start reading (the end of school is within sight…reading for pleasure, here I come!).

-Saving  a life?  The best.  My co-worker Linda and I teamed up, and rescued this little guy from an almost guaranteed death-as-food.   She scooped him up from the front door at our office, she bought a bunch of supplies for him, and I took him to the Oregon Humane Society…where he was adopted in two days!  YAY!

-Cool running?  OK!    My sis and brother-in-law bought me new running shoes as an early graduation present.  They are AMAZING!  I feel like I’m flying!  (A quick glance at a storefront reflection revealed my mental imagery to be way off base, but who cares?  Flying!)  It was also the first time I’d ever been to the Adidas store, so bonus!  Double new!

-Baking soda needs to be measured!   Yikes!  I tried making a new kind of brownie.  I did not measure the baking soda properly.  I learned something new.   Too much baking soda is gross.  How did I not know this before now?  I’m not that great of a baker.  Ah, the mysteries of life.

-Fancy!  We finally went to that wine bar that I’d seen for years but never ventured in to.  It was fancy.

-I’m on the team!   Yup, I’m on the event committee at work.  Planning parties?  Yes, please!

-New show!   Hell on Wheels.  Oh my god.  I’m addicted.

-New dishes at Pambiche and Hopworks.   Yum.  There has to be SOME benefit to having to go to a laundromat, and the fact that the closest one to us is right next door to Pambiche is definitely the silver lining to our dirty laundry.  Hopworks we went to in celebration of my Dad’s 69th b-day.  69 years young and still going strong.  Love you, Dad!

Roz, out.

                         Roz, out.

See you soon, with more year of the new to continue.
